Gamlebyen i Nablus.

Nablus is an ancient city in Palestine with a population of approximately 150.000 inhabitants. Although the built-up area where the old city of Nablus is located was originally a Roman city – demolished by successive earthquakes and wars; the current urban fabric above ground was built during the period 15th-18th century. At that time there were no planners, nor architects and no building regulations.

The argument the lecture is going to discuss is about this historic urban fabric.

When digging into the living experience of this place; How did the builders deal with the Natural topography of the region? Could it be characterized as randomly built area? can we figure out any planning schemes in this area?

Where can we find – if any – Sustainability Measures i.e.

  1. response to climate
  2. respect local customs and fulfil social needs
  3. empowering local economy, trade and industry

Also, has there been any safety measures taken to protect the city? How was the urban fabric organized to guarantee this? Can we see it?

The lecture will depend on showing plans, drawings and photos of the city and buildings.
