War and rising geopolitical tensions are creating challenges for academic freedom. In countries moving toward authoritarian regimes, researchers quickly lose their academic independence, making international collaboration harder. These issues also affect institutions in more stable countries.

These issues also affect institutions in more stable countries.

  • Should some countries be boycotted?
  • What happens when employers take sides in political conflicts?
  • Is it still as easy to research, share opinions, and speak freely as before?

The event begins with a lecture by Saira Basit on academic freedom in uncertain times. Basit is a political scientist, associate professor, and dean at Forsvarets høgskole, specializing in geopolitics and security policy. She also served on the Kierulf Commission, which delivered a report on academic freedom of speech in 2022.

After the lecture, there will be a panel discussion featuring UiS Rector Klaus Mohn, moderated by Harald Birkevold, political editor at Stavanger Aftenblad.
