The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to key theories, ideas and discourses about security, prevention and emergency preparedness, ICT security (both cyber security and information security). The course also provides a brief introduction to Artificial Intelligence.

Content

The course introduces students to basic theory about security, emergency preparedness, ICT security, information security and Artificial Intelligence. All Norwegian enterprises in both the public and private sectors are required to include security and emergency preparedness as integral parts of their organisation. Security and preventive activities are seen in relation to emergency preparedness work in order to prevent crises and prepare to manage residual risk, i.e. crises that cannot be prevented. There will also be an introduction to organisational theory that shows why and how accidents occur and can be prevented. The course also focuses on threats to data and information, as well as ICT security and information security.

The course encourages students to ask critical questions about the perspectives included in the course and also the organisational structures that are introduced with the help of guest lecturers, course literature, and project work.

After successfully completing the course, students will have the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

  • Key concepts and theories about safety, emergency preparedness and ICT security
  • Key theories about organisational accidents
  • The relationship that exists between prevention and emergency preparedness, and between emergency preparedness and crisis management
  • Basic understanding of ICT security and Artificial Intelligence

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Assess the quality of security and emergency preparedness work
  • Apply the concepts and theories in project assignments using relevant issues rooted in the perspectives and issues studied on the course
  • Demonstrate basic understanding regarding the structure of an academic assignment
  • Understand how organisations are affected by computer crime and how ICT security is therefore an integral part of organisations’ work methods

After successfully completing the course, students will have general competence in:

  • The relationship that exists between prevention and emergency preparedness work
  • Critical reflection on security and emergency preparedness
  • How ICT security and information security each contribute to protecting important information and activities in organisations

Written exam is digital. The project assignment is group based and groups consist of 3-4 students.There are no continuation opportunities regarding the project assignment. Students who wish to retake this part may do so the next time the course has ordinary teaching.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
