Bachelor Thesis in Biological Chemistry (BIOBAC)

The thesis is an independent project based on the scientific knowledge acquired during your studies. The thesis also gives the opportunity to show independence by going in depth on a given assignment. The assignment will normally be carried out during the last semester of your studies.

Content

Bachelor theses have different forms. Most projects include experimental work, but some are more theoretical. The student will be supervised in the laboratory by active researchers. The practical part of the thesis is performed in one of the research laboratories at UiS or in institutes in the region which UiS collaborate with, like Nofima, NORCE, SUS, and NIBIO. Many theses are within molecular biology or biochemistry in microorganisms, plants fish or mammalian cells.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed and passed his or her bachelor assignment has acquired the following learning outcomes: He/she - is able to work independently in a chemistry and molecular biology lab - is able to describe a problem in a clear and concise way, according to the terms and expressions within chemistry and biology - has experience in literature search, scientific work and preparing scientific reports - is familiar with and able to reason about relevant scholarly tools and techniques - is able to evaluate own and others work critically - Knows the ethical standard that must be applied in research and scientific reports.

BIO100 Cell Biology, KJE150 General Chemistry

The compulsory study technique and work methods course must be completed and passed before starting on the bachelor's thesis.

At least 30ECTS are required from the following list:

  • KJE150 General Chemistry
  • BIO100 Cell Biology
  • Either BIO200 Biochemistry or BIO210 Biotechnology

Note that you primarily have only one attempt for writing the thesis, see section 3-10 number 4 in Regulations relating to studies and examinations at the University of Stavanger.For all information and regulations relating to bachelor and master’s thesis, see here.The Bachelor's thesis can be written as independent work by one student, or two students may write the project together and hand in collaborative thesis. Only one grade is given per thesis. Deadline for withdrawal is April 1st.

Method of work

It is important both to the student and the supervisor that a good cooperation routine is established during the execution of the project. This may e.g. take the form of regular meetings in which the student will present and discuss his/her work as it develops. The student should preferably have written something that can form the basis of the conversation/discussion with the supervisor. It is an advantage to start writing the thesis as early as possible. All students have a maximum of 4 months from starting the thesis until the thesis must be handed in.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
