NORHED II - Implementing simulation-based health education 2024

The aim of the NORHED II project is to implement simulation-based education to strengthen the capacity and quality of nursing and midwifery education in Malawi and Tanzania. This will be accomplished by improving competencies and implement simulation-based education in study programs and produce research.

The project is supported by NORAD through the NORHED II program for the period 2021–2026.  The project is built on South-South-North partnerships and contributes to share knowledge and capacity building in simulation-based education.

Year 2024 has been an active year with several scientific publications, oral and poster posters presentations at international and national scientific conferences by the faculty at KUHeS, KCMUCo, UIS and the four PhD candidates at KUHES and KCMUCo. The international conferences attended were; 4th African Nursing Conference 2024 Gauteng, South Africa and SESAM Society for simulation in Europe in Prague.

The project has currently five PhD candidates (three PhD candidate from KUHeS and two PhD candidate from KCMUCo), an additional candidate started her Phd project in 2024. Nine master students funded by the project (7 from KUHeS and 2 from KCMUCo) are finalizing their thesis. One of the master students has already published a scientific article in an international journal.

To further strengthen nursing and midwifery lectures and clinical instructors’ competencies on simulation-based education several refreshers’ workshops in Malawi and Tanzania in 2024 has been conducted as well as establishing simulation corners in health institutions.

One of the highlights in March 2024 was the official opening of the simulation center at KUHeS and the approval of Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi simulation guidelines. The guidelines are distributed to all nursing and midwifery training institutions and health facilities as part of simulation-based education sustainability in Malawi.

To follow up the experiences of implementing simulation-based education in three regions in Malawi data collection was conducted in health care education settings and health care facilities in 2024.

The annual meeting with all the partners took place at KCMUCo in November. The NORHED II week in Malawi in October where NORAD has invited all Norwegian universities and partner institutions in Malawi gave the PI from KUHeS, the partners from UIS, two PhD students and three MSc students at KUHeS the opportunity to present the project to other participants, as well as to discuss potential for synergies/collaboration across the projects/initiatives.
