Upcoming Seminar: Peatlands – Nature's Carbon Storage

For around 10,000 years, peatlands have been sequestering and preserving carbon within their acidic ecosystems. As a result, they have evolved into wetland environments rich in organic matter, primarily peat. Although peatlands cover about 3% of the Earth's land surface, they store nearly 30% of the world's soil carbon.

Peatlands are found worldwide, with concentrations in Canada, Russia, and Scandinavia, as well as in tropical areas such as Southeast Asia and the Amazon. Despite their crucial role in carbon sequestration, peatlands are under severe threat from human activities, which lead to carbon emissions and contribute nearly 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Protecting and restoring peatlands is essential to maintaining their function as carbon sinks, yet they receive little attention in climate discussions. The global volume of peatlands remains unknown, and ongoing efforts are focused on developing techniques to accurately estimate their extent and thickness. These measurements are key to understanding their potential greenhouse gas emissions.

Emmanuel Aduse-Poku conducts his research at the Department of Energy Resources, where they are working to estimate the carbon stock of Norwegian peatlands using a combination of research tools. This will provide valuable insight into how much carbon is stored in Norwegian peatlands for accurate carbon stock assessment.

Join us for an engaging discussion about peatlands, one of nature’s vital carbon storehouses and a crucial ally in the fight against climate change.

Breakfast will be served.
