Panel debate: How do we make the study period better for queer people?

Although the vast majority of students generally have a good experience with student life, surveys indicate that unfortunately, there are certain groups that stand out negatively. LGBTQ+ individuals are one of these groups, with transgender individuals being particularly affected.

For instance, a study from 2020 shows that while 3-5 % of students report experiencing suicide attempts, the corresponding figure among transgender students is as high as 21-23 %.

Why is this the case? And what can and should be done to improve the student experience for LGBTQ+ individuals?

Panel:

  • Cecilie Larsen – PhD Candidate at UiS (Moderator)
  • Oliver Verhelst – Leader of Skeiv Ungdom Rogaland and master’s student at UiS
  • Karoline Skarstein – Leader of FRI Rogaland
  • Elisabeth Lund Engebretsen – Professor in Gender Studies at the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Stavanger.
  • Student Organization at UiS
