Play against one of the world’s best chess players and hear her in conversation with Ola Kvaløy.
Sofia Polgar is part of a sibling trio (the Polgar sisters) with a very unique story. Their father's goal was to have at least one world chess champion among his children. He had 3 daughters, and all of them reached the world elite in chess: Sofia, Susan, and Judit.
Very few women have achieved such a level, and even today, there is a significant imbalance between male and female grandmasters in chess.
On August 22nd, Sofia Polgar is coming to UiS to meet students and staff in a simultaneous chess exhibition. Simultaneous chess is when one person plays against many at once, with each player having their own board. When Sofia Polgar comes to make a move, the player must have made their move. All players play with black pieces, and you don't need to be a strong chess player to participate. We're playing without a clock.
There's only room for 10 players, so sign up today! Women are encouraged to register.
If you don't get a place after registration, it is still possible to turn up and get a place if there is a vacancy. It is also rumored that Polgar's husband and grandmaster Yona Kosashvili appears. We will arrange a game of spontaneous simultaneous chess with him so that everyone who wants to play will have the opportunity to do so.
There will be a conversation with Sofia before the simultaneous exhibition, where she will talk about her upbringing, being a woman in a male-dominated sport, art, and life. Everyone is welcome to watch and listen, even if you're not participating in the simultaneous games.
You do not need to register to be a spectator.
Welcome!
