Corrosion Under Insulation - One of the largest integrity challenges in Norwegian Oil & Gas industry

Wednesday 8 March 2023 13:00-15:00,
TBA.

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is a major challenge for different process industries. Today it is managed in many ways, ranging from full removal of insulation to minimal maintenance including some inspection with insufficient non-destructive testing. These two extremes exhibit a lack of understanding and a lack of systematic approach in managing the CUI risk, globally.

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is a major challenge for different process industries. For hydrocarbon leaks in the oil and gas industry CUI represent approx..50% of the reported loss of containment incidents. Today it is managed in many ways, ranging from full removal of insulation to minimal maintenance including some inspection with insufficient non-destructive testing. These two extremes exhibit a lack of understanding and a lack of systematic approach in managing the CUI risk, globally.

The presentation will describe the results from a recent CUI Joint Industry Project (JIP) where the oil and gas industry in the North Sea area has established a methodology for managing the CUI threat. In this context managing the CUI threat involves risk assessment, risk mitigation, risk update and experience transfer in a systematic manner. The methodology assesses 4 CUI barriers: Material, coating, water wetting and design. Further details will be elaborated on in the article.

DNV enables this methodology for the industry in DNV-RP-G109 "Risk Based Management of Corrosion Under Insulation" in Q4 2019. The Recommended Practice is issued alongside the cloud-based web application “CUI Manager”, supporting the RP work process. This web application can be aligned with individual company specific requirements, as well as solely rely on the DNV RP methodology, or use a combination of the two.

There exist several industry guidelines to assist in tackle the CUI threat. DNV has on an assignment from Ptil made studies on how these guidelines can support the industry. Furthermore, DNV has also in the same assignment assessed how the operators on NCS are managing the threat. These elements will also be described in the presentation.

AGENDA

  • CUI Background
  • Development of a new risk-based methodology and description of this
  • Implementation of new methodology
  • Guidelines and operator practice
  • QA / Discussion

The presentation will be held by Sr. Principal Engineer Frode Wiggen from DNV. Frode has been the technical lead for the development of DNV-RP-G109 as well as technical lead for the two latest DNV studies performed for Ptil regarding CUI.

The seminar will takes place on Wednesday, March 8 from 13:00 - 14:00 at the UiS (TBA).

There will be an open discussion after the presentation of the subject. Members of CIAM will receive an invitation for this event. If you don’t have an invitation, pleses send an e-mail to ciam@uis.no for queries.

The Seminar is hosted by the CIAM Hub of Safety and Risk
