Content

Through a selection of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, the course will qualify the students to be able to work in an exploratory manner and reflect thoroughly and relevantly within their specialisation area in the master's project. The course will move partly on a theoretical/principled level and partly on a concrete level with the practitioner and/or the individual master's project as a starting point.

The course has four subtopics or chapters, of which the first three are compulsory and common, while the last one offers some alternative options (only two of the courses/options are initiated each year):

- An intensive introductory course in project preparation, academic writing and artistic research methods (shared with the Artistic Research programme)

- An elementary introduction to different academic traditions (jointly with the main programme for artistic research/Artistic Research)

- Performance practice (classical)

- Editing issues and practice / Performer history / Orchestra history / Performance Studies / Score analysis

The course will primarily provide methodological and theoretical tools for the development of the candidates' master's project and a foundation for the reflection component. The lectures/seminars are thematically organised, with the first part concentrating on personal project development, as well as writing training and artistic research methods. Furthermore, basic theory is introduced to help with the conceptual and analytical development and maturation of the candidates' own master's project, as well as for reflection on their own performance and future artistic work. This involves everything from an elementary introduction to scientific traditions to performance practice and score analysis.

As part of the development of the master's project and the final reflection text, instruction is also given in how to present material in the Research Catalogue.

A detailed course and lecture plan will be prepared for each of the four chapters.
