The course consists of three topics:
- Professional and ethical assessments
- Equality, justice and innovation
- Critical application of knowledge
The subject addresses key professional and ethical issues related to professional practice within social work. The students shall reflect critically on the application of knowledge and professional and ethical assessments in practice, and their professional responsibility to promote user participation, equality, justice and innovation in welfare services.
Learning outcome
After successfully completing and passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Professional and ethical assessments
- Has insight into and can reflect critically on their professional role in relation to institutional and political requirements in the provision of services.
- Has insight into ethical issues and can manage ethical dilemmas in the professional role and in encounters with people.
- Has insight into how to exercise judgment in situations where there is inadequate and/or conflicting information, and identify opportunities within different professional and institutional contexts.
Equality, justice and innovation
- Can reflect on and apply knowledge that contributes to an equal provision of services.
- Can disseminate professional knowledge that promotes equality and diversity, and contribute to gender equality, inclusion, mastery and participation in everyday life, school and working life.
- Has insight into conditions that contribute to inequality and can promote social justice together with people in vulnerable positions.
- Has insight into political and administrative decision-making processes and how social workers can contribute to general information and political advice.
- Has knowledge about innovation and innovative processes in social work, and can contribute to service innovation and systematic and quality-improving work processes.
- Can reflect on how knowledge can be applied in new areas and contribute to innovative thinking and innovation in the services.
Critical application of knowledge
- Can apply research-based, experience-based and user-based knowledge in professional practice.
- Can assess scientific knowledge and political framework conditions in a practical context. Can acquire new knowledge and can make professional assessments, decisions and actions in accordance with knowledge-based practice. In addition, the candidate must be able to document and communicate their professional knowledge.
- Has knowledge about social science methodology and its possibilities and limitations.
- Has knowledge about research and development work relevant to social work, nationally and internationally.

The examination consists of a written part and an oral part.Written examination: Individual written assignment. The topic is defined by the course coordinator. Scope of 3500 words (+/- 10%), excluding table of contents and bibliography. Referencing style: APA 7th.The assignment must receive a pass grade before students can take the oral examination. The preliminary grade given on the written assignment must be announced no later than 24 hours before the oral examination takes place.Oral examination: The oral examination is used for possible adjustment of the grade. The oral grade can be used to adjust the written examination grade up a whole grade or down a whole grade.Students who fail the re-sit or re-scheduled course examination must take the next ordinary examination together with the subsequent year group. The compulsory activities that have already been approved do not have to be retaken. Students must take the examination in accordance with any new and revised course description, but decide themselves whether to follow teaching in the new examination semester.
Coursework requirements
This compulsory activity must be approved in order for students to take the examination. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb, normally no later than 7 days before the examination. Students who lack approval will be withdrawn from the examination.
Attendance requirements: At least 75% attendance at defined teaching activities is required. See announcement on Canvas.If attendance requirements are not met, students lose the right to take the examination, regardless of the reason.
