Content

The course will problematize and discuss how the working professionals can both work with and collaborate with children in both educational and welfare institutions based on various social pedagogical perspectives, including dialogism and critical pedagogy. The inclusion of children is enshrined in both social policy and legal guidelines for upbringing and welfare services. The course will draw on recent research on collaboration between children and professionals. The purpose of the thematic area is to discuss challenges related to cooperation with children within different institutional frameworks. The course will safeguard UiS and NTNU's commitment to sustainable development and relate to section 10.2 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (promoting inclusion regardless of age, gender and disability), section 16.6 (effective, responsible and open institutions) and section 16.7 (responsiveness, inclusive, participant-based and representative decision-making processes at all levels).

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate has advanced knowledge of various social pedagogical perspectives, interpretive research frameworks and methods related to social pedagogical practice, work and collaboration with children.

The candidate can contribute to creation of new knowledge, innovative methods, interpretations, and professional projects focused om work and collaboration with children

The candidate can evaluate and assess the necessity and use of various present-day and innovative methods and processes related to research and professional projects based on the knowledge of the EU's strategy documents, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and various innovative profession-related and research perspectives used in working and collaborating with children.

Skills

The candidate can do research at the high international level in the area of work and collaboration with children

The candidate can analyze and think critically about collaborative relationships with children can problematize and discuss different social pedagogical perspectives in relation to cooperation with children

The candidate can identify ethical challenges related to work and collaboration with children in various institutions and deal with complex professional challenges. Render critique and criticism of the established knowledge and practice in the area of work and collaboration with children

The candidate can formulate complex research questions related to the course’s topic, describe, and analyze the challenges related to the complex research questions based on the syllabus literature

General competence

The candidate can identify, analyze, and discuss relevant ethical challenges related to professionals' work and collaboration with children in various institutions and do research with a high level of professional integrity.

The candidate can disseminate the results of own research and developmental activities via national and international media and participate in the debates in the area of work and collaboration with children in international forums.

The candidate can manage complex working tasks and innovative projects, assess the need for and take initiative to create and run innovations in the area of work and collaboration with children.

Required prerequisite knowledge

The course is open to interested PhD candidates who are enrolled in a PhD program.

Recommended prerequisites

Documented working experience in institutions where activities with children are main focus.

Basic knowledge of UN’s sustainable goals.

Individual written assignment of 4000 words, based on the pre-approved abstract. The paper has to be on a chosen topic based on the must-read literature list.Deadline: one month after the end of the teaching activities of the course

Coursework requirements

Compulsory attendance 80%
Required participation at least 80% and approved abstract for the individual paper.

Method of work

Teaching takes place over 3 days with lectures, discussions, and active learning methods. Self-study that includes reading av must-read literature and writing an abstract can amount to at least three weeks.

The course can be taught in Norwegian or English.

The teaching may be cancelled or changed if there are fewer than 5 enrollees and/or the Department of Social Work/Research School does not have teaching capacity.

Participants must be enrolled in a PhD programme.
