CAD/CAM and Additive Manufacturing (MSK550)

The course aims to provide fundamental understanding in principles and applications of computer-assisted technologies in the mechanical engineering discipline. It starts with the mathematical description of geometric modelling techniques and covers the important activities and processes in a product's life cycle such as CAD/CAM software, optimization, additive manufacturing, modelling mechanical systems, multibody dynamics analysis, principles of flexible manufacturing systems, concepts of concurrent engineering, reverse engineering and virtual manufacturing, process control, Computer numerical control (CNC), machines programming, interoduction to automation in Manufacturing systems

Exam

Report and written exam

Form of assessment Weight Duration Marks Aid
Written exam 7/10 4 Hours Letter grades Valid calculator
Report 3/10 6 Weeks Letter grades All

The evaluation has two parts: digital written exam 4 hours and a report based on project work. Digital written exam. An individual project work is conducted within a period of 6 weeks and presented to the class by the end of the semester. The student must pass the presentation to pass the report. If a student cannot submit the project report within the given deadline, the project grade of the student will be marked F unless there is a legal reason for extended submission. A student who has got F in the project work can take new project title next time the course offered. The student must pass both the written exam and the report to obtain an overall pass grade in the course.

Coursework requirements

Presentation of projectwork, Mandatory assignments

To take the written exam for this course, the student should must get the following approved:

  • 4 out of 6 theory/computational assignments
  • 2 practical exercises

In addition, the student must present the project work. The presentation must be conducted in advance of submission of the report and it must be approved to pass the report.

Master studies at the Faculty of Science and Technology. For students with background in Mechanical Engineering.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
