Organic Chemistry 1 (KJE200)

The student should understand how molecules are assembled from atoms, and how this assembly controls the reactivity. The student should be able to draw mechanisms for elementary reactions and apply the knowledge to predict the product of reactions and suggest short syntheses. The student should master elementary laboratory techniques and be able to perform organic reactions in laboratory scale.

Content

Following subjects are treated: Bonding properties in organic molecules, the main functional groups, the IUPAC naming system, isomers and stereoisomers, reaction mechanisms, and the relationship between structure and reactivity. The course also contains a short introduction to polymers, spectroscopic methods and NMR. The laboratory experiments gives an introduction into organic synthesis, laboratory techniques and qualitative analysis (Both by chemical and spectroscopic methods). A selection of reactions are performed and the products analysed for functional groups. The students also learn to keep a decent lab journal of their experiments, and write concise reports with a text editor and ChemDraw program for drawing molecules and mechanisms.

Learning outcome

The student should understand how molecules are assembled from atoms, and how this assembly controls the reactivity of molecules. The student should be able to draw mechanisms of elementary reactions as polar addition, EAS, SN1/SN2, esterifications and acetal formation. This knowledge should be applicable for predicting the product of reactions and suggesting short syntheses of molecules. The student should be able to identify and determine the orientation of chiral centres and name molecules in accordance with the IUPAC-system. The student should be able to predict important IR-frequencies and estimate NMR-spectra based on the molecular structure.

The student should master elementary laboratory techniques like extraction, distillation, recrystallisation and thin layer chromathography, be able to perform organic reactions in laboratory scale and determine melting points and boiling points of compounds.

The student learn active use of a labjournal, to find and read MSDS-data, write concise dscriptions of the experiments, and apply ChemDraw drawing program together with a text editor for drawing molecules and mechanisms in reports.

Exam

Portfolio and written exam

Form of assessment Weight Duration Marks Aid
Written exam 7/10 4 Hours Letter grades None permitted
Folder 3/10 1 Semesters Letter grades

The course has a continuous evaluation. All parts has to be passed to achieve a collected grade for the course. The exam is a digital exam. The course has a module containing labs and exercises. In this module there are tasks that must be performed. Lab journal and reports are part of a portfolio evaluation where these are evaluated together and given a joint grade. There are not given grades until all tasks are delivered and the portfolio are censored as a unit. The portfolio must be completed within one semester. There are no continuation possibilities for the portfolio. Students who do not complete the portfolio may deliver the complete portfolio again next time the course is given. The course has weekly exercises on the OWL2 platform delivered by Cengage. The exercises performed within the deadlines through the semester is awarded points that are part of the evaluation of the lab- and exercise portfolio. In the portfolio the lab course are weighted ¾ and the OWL exercises ¼.

Coursework requirements

The lab work is performed under facilitation and supervision. Thus, it is necessary to do this work at fixed times with obligatory attendance.

Method of work

The course has a theory part and a laboratory part. The theory course has 4 hrs. of lectures every week. The laboratory course has 1 hr. lab-lecture and 5 hrs. laboratory work for 9 weeks. Mandatory weekly excercises on an internet-based platform. All lab excercises including lab-journal and reports must be made.

Open for

Due to limited capacity in the laboratory, the course is in principle only available for bachelor students on the "Chemistry and Environment/Environmental Engineering" and "Biological Chemistry" programs, and students on the "Integrated teacher's programme". Other students can only be accepted by individual admission by the department if there are available laboratory capacity.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
