Come and celebrate the International Women’s Day with the music collective The Other Gender.
In 2021, music students Maren Resell Sørheim and Papole Khaki attended yet another concert where the musicians on stage were mostly men. This gave them the idea to start The Other Gender (TOG).
Together with fellow students from the jazz program at UiS, they embarked on a musical equality project aiming to showcase female and non-binary performers and composers.
TOG consists of over 20 members who perform in various formations. Their compositions cover a wide range of styles with influences from jazz, folk music, and pop. Currently, they are working on playing and interpreting female composers from the American jazz tradition in their own way.
On Women's Day, they will perform a half-hour concert in the library. Afterwards, there will be a discussion about the struggle for women's rights and gender equality in the music industry and life in general.
