Kort om meg

I am Professor of Health Humanities and Psychosocial Studies and Academic Director of PROFRES 2.0 The Interdisciplinary, Interprofessional and Practice-Near Research School. PROFRES is national doctoral research school supporting early career researchers within and across the fields and sectors of healthcare, welfare and education. PROFRES is financed by the Research Council of Norway for an eight-year period (2022-2030), and is built on a consortium of nine collaborating HE institutions in Norway: the Universities of Stavanger (UiS), Agder (UiA), Nord and South-Eastern Norway (USN), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Molde University College (HiM), Volda University College, Østfold University College (HiØf) and VID Specialized University. International HE partners are Aalborg University and Roskilde University in Denmark, and Tallinn University in Estonia. PROFRES' Project Office is based at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Stavanger, which also holds the formal project ownership of the Research School.

Network

Since 2021, I have been on the editorial board of Journal for Psychosocial Studies. I am a key member of the European research collaboration, Women's Marginalized Health Network (WOMAHN).  I am a founding member of the research group Creative Experience Lab at the University of Stavanger, the Nordic Network for Psychosocial Studies, as well as the Association for Psychosocial Studies, Stavanger Breast Cancer Research Group at Stavanger University Hospital, and the Nordic researcher network Death: Emotions, Relations & Culture (DERC). I am a longstanding member of the Professional Relations programme area at the University of Stavanger. From 2015-2022, I was a member of the Executive Committee in the International Research Group for Psycho-Societal Analysis, where I continue to be an active participant. I am also an associate member of the research group Society, Health & Power (SHEP) in the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, University of Oslo.

Current PhD supervision

  • Hanna Baardsen (main supervisor). PhD project: Between health policy and care practice in the cancer patient pathway: A psychosocial study of patients' biographical narratives.
  • Iselin Brogeland (main supervisor). PhD project: Dancing through Grief

Past supervision

  • Anne Kristine Ådland (co-supervisor). PhD project: An ethnographic fieldwork study of how multicultural nursing home staff communities handle death in end-of-life care
  • Damoun Nassehi (co-mentor) Post-doc project: Relational ethics in technology-mediated medical practice.

Teaching

Dette forsker jeg på

My research is broadly characterized by interdisciplinary engagement across the humanities, social sciences, health sciences and medicine. A longstanding research interest is in Psychosocial Studies of enculturated and embodied experience (e.g. of the breast, breastfeeding, and of breast cancer, and also of ageing and dying-death). I am co-editor of the Norwegian anthology Alt som lever, må dø. Døden som tverrfaglig kunnskapsfelt (Gripsrud & Thoresen, 2019, Scandinavian Academic Press, open access). I have been involved in international research collaborations on developing psychosocial methodology and new qualitative methods (Visual Matrix). I am interested in exploring creative forms of writing that are appropriate for inquiry into psychosocially complex and/or emotionally challenging and reflexive topics. I am also engaged in research on psychosocial conditions for helping professionals' relational work, professional education and development, and the ethic of care. I've been a collaborating researcher in the project Caring Futures: Developing care ethics for technology-mediated care practices (QUALITECH), funded by the Research Council of Norway (2020-2024). My interest in enriching qualitative inquiry extends to an 'applied' method concerning reflective practice, as well as projects that are situated in-between the arts, culture and sciences.

Akademisk bakgrunn

I have a humanities background and hold a PhD in Cultural Studies from the Department of Fine Art, History of Art & Cultural Studies, University of Leeds (2006).
