Hovedformålet til forskningsgruppen er å produsere kunnskap relatert til undervisning og læring innen kroppsøvingsfaget ved lærerutdanningen, grunnskole og videregående opplæring.

Forskningsgruppen «Profesjonsutvikling i skolesystemet» (PIS) består av forskere, undervisere, og doktorgradsstipendiater ved Universitetet i Stavanger.
PIS bringer sammen forskere, undervisere, og studenter, fra alle deler av skolesystemet, for å skape relevant forskning av høy kvalitet til undervisningssektoren.
