Through a doctoral programme, you acquire skills that can be applied in many sectors. The PhD programme educates independent researchers at an international level, which requires a high degree of independence and the ability to complete tasks effectively. The education is conducted in accordance with recognized scientific and ethical principles and in interaction with national and international research environments.

The PhD program in Health and Medicine is based on research environments associated with the three academic departments at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Stavanger:

Our research environments are broad and encompass research that promotes health promotion, prevention, and societal participation; research that supports ethical and sustainable changes in health and welfare services and ensures quality; research on the use of simulation in clinical practice and education; and research in health technology, digitalization, and e-health. Additionally, the Faculty of Health Sciences maintains close research collaborations with other faculties at the University of Stavanger, as well as with other universities, both nationally and internationally, and with the specialist and primary healthcare services.    

At the Faculty of Health Sciences, we have around 70 PhD candidates. Among these are candidates employed as research fellows at the university, as well as candidates with external funding through their employer or various scholarship schemes.

The PhD programme in Health and Medicine consists of practical research under supervision and is designed to be completed in three years of full-time study.

The doctoral thesis should contribute to the development of new professional knowledge and be at an international level within the field. You are expected to attend conferences, disseminate your research, and publish in international journals throughout the programme.

The PhD study programme defines the competency you will have obtained by completing a PhD.

The faculty of Health Sciences offers several courses that can be included in the instructional component of the PhD. In the PhD programme in Health and Medicine you are required to include 10 ESTC in philosophy of science and research ethics, 10 ESTC in research methods, and 10 ESTC in specialization courses in the instructional component.

External candidates may apply for admission to single courses at UiS. PhD courses from other national or international institutions may be a part of the instructional component. The faculty is supportive of PhD courses being taken at other institutions.

To apply for the Ph.D. program in Health and Medicine you need

  • a five-year master’s degree or equivalent education from a relevant field
  • a strong academic background from previous studies
  • documentation of full funding for the doctoral study
  • a supervisor at the faculty
  • a complete project description that shows your role in the project

Applications for admission are processed monthly by the faculty’s doctoral committee, which makes a comprehensive assessment of the application. The deadline for submitting cases to the doctoral committee is 10 working days before the meeting date.
