Drilling and Well Engineering (ENP110)
The course will focus on the well construction process, and covers the drilling operation with relevant infrastructure, dimensioning and cementing of casing strings and methods to ensure well integrity during drilling and how to manage kicks. Calculations relevant for dimensioning and choice of equipment, as well as optimization of the drilling process will be emphasized.

Learning outcome
Upon completion of the course, you should:
- Understand and describe important surface equipment and how the drill string is designed; the course focuses in particular on drawworks, the circulation system, the rotational system, drill bits, drill pipes and drill collars, and downhole measurement tools
- Understand the functions of drilling fluids and well cement slurry, be familiar with the flow and deformation properties of these fluids, and be able to calculate friction pressure losses during circulation of the fluids. You should also know how casing strings are cemented
- Be familiar with important properties of rock formations that are drilled, and formation stresses such as overburden stress, fracture pressure and pore pressure, and be able to use these concepts to determine casing settings depths and adequate dimensioning of casings
- Acquire a basic understanding for well barriers and barrier design, with particular emphasis on the role of well barriers in kick situations that can lead to blowout
- Be able to perform calculations relevant to drilling operations
- Be familiar with different types of wells and their application
