Academic writing: From first draft to publication
Course Overview
This course is designed for PhD candidates at UiS who aim to publish their work in academic books or journals. The final segment of the course will focus on how to compile all elements into a comprehensive "kappe."
Course Description
This workshop will systematically guide participants through the key challenges of academic writing and publishing, including identifying your audience, formulating a core argument, and structuring your work. Additionally, participants will learn how to select the right journal for publication and manage feedback from peer reviewers.
The second day of the workshop is dedicated to writing the "kappe" for your PhD thesis. A thesis by publication includes not only the articles intended for publication but also the narrative ("kappe") that demonstrates to examiners that you have fulfilled the requirements of "doctorateness." In this session, we will explore what your examiners expect, discuss strategies for the writing process, and examine the essential components of a strong "kappe."
The course instructor is Lynn Nygaard. She is an experienced course instructor, author and researcher. Nygaard has held workshops in academic writing for several years at UiS.
