How to apply

You may apply for admission in two ways:

1. Apply for a PhD fellowship

Many PhD candidates finance their education through a fellowship. You can apply for admission by applying for a fellowship from our vacant positions.

The announcements includes all the requirements for your application. Normally, it consists of a preliminary project proposal and several qualification requirements. If you are offered a PhD fellowship at our faculty this also means that you will be admitted to the PhD programme in Health and Medicine.

If you are admitted through a PhD fellowship you must submit your final project plan for approval by the doctoral committee within 3 months.

2. Apply with external funding

You can also apply for admission to a PhD programme with external funding. Financial matters must be clarified between the funding part and UiS before admission.

In the PhD programme in Health and Medicine we require documentation of full funding of the PhD study, including stay abroad and operating costs. We do not allow so-called self-funding.

For applicants who are not fully funded through scholarship schemes, documentation is required to show that at least 50% of your working hours will be spent on your PhD education.

Industrial and public sector PhD

Employers may apply for the Public Sector PhD or Industrial PhD scheme for their employees. A public entity or company can apply for financial support through the Research Council, which corresponds to half of the stipend rate for three years. Such projects are a collaboration between three parties: the public entity, UiS, and the candidate. Read more about the Industrial and Public Sector PhD.
