About me
I have years of experience in language teaching at primary and secondary school levels, and as an Associate Professor in Educational Science at the University of Stavanger, I have specialized in literacy education at the National Centre for Reading Education and Research (National Reading Centre).
Through networks such as the European Literacy Network (ELN) and Decentralized Competence Development (DEKOMP), and projects like Tid for Lesing (Time to Read), my goal is to make research more accessible to practitioners and to collaborate with teachers to improve literacy practices in schools.
I am also passionate about writing in various genres, but especially fiction.
Fields of Expertise:
- Early Literacy Education
- Motivation for Writing and Reading
- Discourse Analysis
My research
My research focuses on motivating reading and writing practices. The goal is to find strategies and tools that can help teachers in their planning and implementation endeavors for improving students’ reading and writing skills, especially for students who struggle with motivation. To assist teachers in their planning work, I have developed The ABCS of Writing Motivation, where 9 factors that influence students’ motivation are presented, along with a table of practice examples.
As a linguist and former active politician, I am also interested in language use in political contexts. Using discourse analysis as a method, I have researched how George W. Bush and Barack Obama use metaphors in their political speeches, and proposed lesson plans for addressing the power of metaphors in language teaching.
