Magne Mogstad is Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago and Head Editor of the Journal of Political Economy. This is the first time that lectures by Mogstad have been offered in Norway.

“This is a unique opportunity as it is the first time Magne Mogstad has held a course here in Norway. My supervisor told me that I definitely shouldn’t miss out on this opportunity”, says Hedda Rytter Tveiten, a doctoral research fellow in Economics at the University of Bergen.

The aim of the course was to develop the ability to understand, design, implement and interpret empirical analyses of real data. In recent years, economics has become increasingly empirical. Therefore, it is important for future economists to master data analysis, especially if one has ambitions to assert oneself within the field of economic research.

“The course has been very good in terms of academic benefits. We have received a basic introduction, and we now have a better overview of how the methods are used in practice by those who produce large articles in the best journals. You learn how things are connected, what works and what doesn’t work, as well as the type of problems you may encounter and how to solve them”, says Tveiten.

“In addition, there has also been a very good social programme that has allowed us to get to know and make contacts with people from other universities both in Norway and abroad.”

The course was fully booked, with around 30 students from Aarhus University, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Gothenburg, Lund University, NHH, NTNU, the University of Bergen, the University of Oslo and the University of Stavanger, among others.

Econometrics is a key method used in empirical economic research. Econometrics uses statistical methods and quantitative data to study causality. The method is often used to study the effect of policy instruments, such as: Will people work less if income tax is raised? How effective is punishment in reducing crime? Does new technology make companies more efficient?
