Strategy and Management (IND630)

Strategic management is about how an organization identifies and makes action choices that enable it to deliver unique value to customers and stakeholders. These choices arise by considering factors related to the external environment, the competitive situation, and the organization’s resources and capabilities. Leadership plays a central role at all levels in these processes regarding the design, communication, and execution of the strategy.

This course aims to increase the student's understanding of different factors that can affect the organizations' conditions to succeed. This demands a comprehensive approach to the organization, the competitive environment, and leadership. These factors will influence the management's strategy process.

This will represent a holistic approach to the different topics and disciplines integrated into strategic Leadership. The intention is to move toward integrating different theoretical approaches with contributions from management literature, economics, organizational theory, and psychology. The complexity of the subject shall stimulate critical and analytical thinking and the ability to be a competent partner in a concrete organizational setting.

  • The student should have extensive knowledge of leadership theories relevant to knowledge-, learning, and innovation-intensive organizations
  • The student should have knowledge about how complexity requires collaboration, collective intelligence, and psychological safety

The home exam has a duration of two (2) weeks.The home exam builds on the case the students work in groups with throughout the course. At the end of the home exam, a written report based on the group's case assignment must be submitted. The report must incorporate answers to additional questions given in the home exam. The report must also contain the presentation to be given at the oral exam.After the home exam period has ended and the report has been submitted, an oral exam will be set up.The oral exam has a duration of approx. 30 minutes and is carried out in groups. The oral exam deals with the presentation of the case in the report, in addition to answering questions in the home exam.Exceptionally, the task can be carried out individually by agreement with the subject teacher.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
