Content

The course provides students with a deeper insight into central and current historical topics connected to the student’s independent work with their bachelor thesis. In this course, students will write an individual thesis on a historical topic. Choice of topic will be made in consultation with the respective supervisor.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • develop historical knowledge with detail knowledge connected to a specific research

    question.

  • evaluate historical arguments, explain how these have been created for different purposes,

    and how they may be improved. This includes arguments made by the students themselves.

  • recognise history as an interpreted presentation of lifeworlds in past which historians

    construct in their own present based on sources.

Skills

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • gather, sort, organise, examine, syntethise, quote and critically analyse complex material

    relevant for the bachelor thesis, including primary and secondary sources.

  • evaluate a selection of historical sources relevant for the bachelor thesis with regards to

    reliability, position, perspective and relevance.

  • construct argumentative historical narrative and arguments based on scholarly foundations,

    and reflect on own research results.

  • demonstrate good academic writing skills, including how to structure a thesis, the

    presentation of the argument, language, and references.

General competences

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • able to construct arguments based on scholarly foundations, using sources, theories, and

    methods in a precise and transparent manner.

  • deploy analytical and critical thinking and understanding in fields other than history.

Required prerequisite knowledge

Similar courses completed at other institutions may give exemption from required prerequisite knowledge.

Bachelor students must have a minimum of 45 credit points or equivalent in history at introductory level in order to take the advanced course.

The bachelor thesis is to be between 7 000 - 9 000 words exclusive of footnotes, bibliography, table of content and appendices.Letter grades. 100% of final grade. All aids allowed. Any use of generative AI must be declared and explained.

Coursework requirements

Participation in at least 2 group seminars.

2 individual supervisions.

3 mandatory assignments.

All obligatory activities must be approved in order to qualify to take the exam. Group seminars cannot be replaced with individual supervision.

Students cannot request new supervision when resubmitting the bachelor thesis/new admission.

Method of work

Group seminars, individual research and writing, supervision.

The bachelor thesis is independent work; the students need to find relevant readings themselves.

Readings for the thematical group seminars will be max. 500 pages.
