Content
The course explores topics, key concepts and methodologies at the advanced level in urban development, planning and design. The student must identify relevant concepts and research approaches that are at the core of their PhD topic. Based on this, they undertake in-depth studies of research literature and related approaches to gain state-of-the-art knowledge and expertise about key elements of their research. Based on an in-depth discussion of the literature, the candidate must develop a research manuscript describing literature reviews, gaps of knowledge, original approaches to advance the research field, methodological advances or other topics that form premises for students research questions and the conduct of their PhD project.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, the student should have sufficiently in-depth knowledge of their research topic and specific core concepts and methodologies. Being at the forefront of research within their field, they should be able to perform thorough research and development within the specific topic. The student should be able to develop and answer relevant research questions and discuss relating methodological and research approaches.

Self-study under supervision, literature study, seminars and presentations about selected topics, critiques and hand-in of research manuscript.

Course assessment
There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
