NB! This is an elective course and may be canceled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by January 20th for the spring semester.
The course deals with various drilling/production phase-related designs, operations, and issues. These include operational problems (well integrity) including detection and solution methods, theory of fluid, and Rock/Material Mechanics (Stress and Failure analysis). In addition, their application to wellbore stability design, drill string/tubing/casing design based on various load cases, drilling optimization design, and hydraulics design. Material Testing, Material Selection for Corrosion Control and Prevention methods. A minor adjustment to the plan may occur to update the course with modern relevant topics.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, the student should
- Possess knowledge of drilling/production wellbore-related problems/failure, detection, and solution/repair methods.
- Possess knowledge of NORSOK Well Integrity, NORSOK Design Criteria, HSE, and Quality and Operational Risk issues during the well construction process.
- Possess knowledge of various material testing methods and parameter determinations.
- Possess knowledge of Solid/Rock mechanics dealing with stress-stain and failure analysis of the mechanics of Wellbore and Tubulars.
- Possess knowledge of drilling operations/drilling rate (ROP) optimization.
- Possess knowledge of material selection for various loading and corrosive environments.
- Possess knowledge of various corrosion types in oil well and prevention/control methods
- Be able to perform hydraulic design using analytical techniques and computer simulations
- Be able to perform well stability designs (well collapse and Well fracturing) using analytical techniques
- Be able to perform drill string mechanics design using analytical techniques and computer simulations. In addition, be able to perform drill string sticking point determination methods with analytical methods.
- Be able to perform production tubing/casing design for various loading scenarios during the production, stimulation, and construction processes using analytical techniques and computer simulations.
