Communication and Decision making in Prehospital Emergency Medical Care (MPH110)

This course aims to increase student knowledge in communication and decision making, to develop their ability to reflect on prehospital emergency situations, and additionally, to develop an awareness of human dignity and integrity during critical incidents. The course also introduces simulation based training as a tool to enhance communication and decision making.

  • Can critically appraise key knowledge in communication, related to human factors, decision making and management in prehospital emergencies
  • Has thorough knowledge of theory of effective communication within a team, as well as with patients and relatives in emergency situations
  • Has knowledge about how simulation based training can be used as a tool to enhance communication and decision making in clinical practice.

The candidate

  • Can critically evaluate human factors that are involved when faced with critical incidents and describe the application of crew resource management techniques to minimize risks and improve outcomes
  • Can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of inter-agency working, specifically in relation to management, decision making, communication and team working
  • Can facilitate simulation based training

Method of work

The teaching will be arranged in concentrated on-campus modules. The teaching and learning style is interactive and reflective, using presentations and dialogue/discussions, simulation and group work drawing on both the expert teachers and the experience of the student.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
