Content

The course provides an introduction to academic writing and communication.

Here, a particular emphasis is placed on key aspects of formal, written, scientific presentation methods.

In addition, the course provides an introduction to research ethics, with a focus on ethical agreements, data storage regulations and the role of regional committees for research ethics.

Overall, the course builds essential, fundational competence for further studies in psychology as a discipline and a year-long study, but also for academic studies more generally.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

On successful completion of this course, students will

  • have broad knowledge of key elements of academic communication and research ethics
  • have knowledge of the importance of various ethical agreements and data storage regulations
  • have knowledge of main elements of a research article

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  • carry out a literature search and find in-depth literature for further reflection
  • use correct referencing styles according to current APA guidelines
  • summarize research articles
  • analyze and relate critically to research studies
  • reflect on central issues within research ethics

Students who have not passed either the ordinary or the postponed exam, are referred to the next ordinary exam. Students must take the exam according to any new and revised course description for the course, but decide for themselves whether they want to follow teaching in the new exam semester.

All of the compulsory activities must be approved in order for the student to be eligible for examination. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb, normally no later than 7 days before the examination. Students who lack approval of one or more compulsory activities will be withdrawn from the examination.

Compulsary activities:

Written exercise/assignment (one or partial assignemnts). A detailed activity plan will be provided by the course coordinator at the start of the course. Grade: pass / fail.

Method of work

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

  • The student is expected to prepare for the lectures through literature studies. Recommended literature is indicated in the course plan.
  • ​In the seminars, the different parts of the course are dealt with via different learning activities.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
