Content

The course consists of three themes:

  • Social science research methods
  • Critical thinking and knowledge-based practice
  • Academic communication

The course provides the student with knowledge of research methods. The student will reflect on how different knowledge sources can be used systematically to improve the quality of social work. The student will be able to document and communicate their professional knowledge. The course also provides a practical introduction to planning and conducting a small-scale knowledge development project, such as a bachelor's thesis based on literature or document studies.

Learning outcome

After completing and passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of scientific theory and how knowledge is developed and understood.
  • Knowledge of social science methods and their potential and limitations.
  • Is familiar with relevant academic debates, research, and development work.

Skills

  • Can apply new professional knowledge methodically and scientifically.
  • Can find, assess, and refer to subject matters and present this orally and in writing.
  • Can apply research knowledge as a basis for knowledge-based practice.
  • Can assess research knowledge in a practical context.

  • Can critically engage with research-based knowledge within the social work field.
  • Can plan and conduct a small-scale knowledge development project relevant to their field.

Exam

Home exam 1/1 4 Days Letter grades

Home exam: Written group assignment. The assignment can be written in groups consisting of two to three students. Length: maximum 1500 words excluding bibliography. Reference style: APA 7th. The exam will be delivered on Inspera.

Coursework requirements

Multiple choice assignment on Canvas, Written group assignment, 75% compulsory attendance at lectures and seminars in methods

Both compulsory activities must be approved in order for the student to take the exam. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb. Students who lack approval of one or more compulsory activities will not be permitted to take their exam.

Conditions for taking the exam/assessment:

  • Work requirement 1: Multiple choice assignment on Canvas.
  • Work assignment 2: Written group assignment.
  • 75% compulsory attendance at lectures and seminars in methods.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
