Battery Manufacturing (ENE200)

The course will provide students with an overview of industrial production of non-aqueous battery systems, especially lithium-ion batteries. Emphasis will be placed on how materials and systems developed at small, laboratory scales are scaled up to large-scale production for commercial purposes.

The course is divided into the following modules:

  • Battery design and HSE: introduction to battery design, mixing and rheology
  • Batteries and electrochemistry: Preparation of slurry and coating in the battery lab
  • Battery packs and battery management: battery packs and BMS, chemistry in solid state batteries; coating, calendering, battery assembly the battery lab
  • Battery testing: overview of principles for testing, cell safety and demonstration of nail penetration, testing self-assembled batteries in the lab
  • Process technology related to a battery manufacturing company

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th.

The course will be conducted in collaboration with industrial partners. All laboratory work will be carried out at the industrial partner Beyonder AS.

The course is divided into the following modules:

  • Battery design and background theory: introduction to battery design, mixing and rheology
  • Batteries and electrochemistry: Preparation of slurries and casting electrodes in the lab vs. at industrial scale
  • Battery packs and battery management: battery packs and battery management systems (BMS), chemistry in solid state batteries; coating, calendering, battery assembly in the lab vs. at industrial scale
  • Battery testing: overview of principles for testing, cell safety and demonstration of nail penetration, testing of self-assembled batteries in the lab
  • Process technology related to a battery manufacturing company

Learning outcome

After taking this course, the student will:

  • Understand principles and key parameters related to battery design
  • Have insight into the relationship between design and HSE
  • Have knowledge of how to build a battery from start to finish
  • Have knowledge of how a laboratory-scale process can be scaled up to an industrial process
  • Be able to describe the process for battery production; from laboratory scale to assembly and assembly of batteries on industrial scale (electrode - cell - module)
  • Be able to describe battery packs and control systems
